In a big leap for Indian aviation, the Lok Sabha has passed the Protection and Enforcement of Interests in Aircraft Objects Bill, making it easier for global aircraft leasing companies to operate in India. This bill streamlines the repossession of planes and engines if airlines default on payments, aligning Indian law with the Cape Town Convention—a global framework that supports safer, faster aviation financing.
The push for reform gained traction after the 2023 Go First-SMBC dispute, where legal roadblocks kept lessors from reclaiming their jets. Now, with clearer rules in place, India is removing legal turbulence and opening its skies to more global investment and aircraft leasing giants.
